St. Stephen's Monastery Guided Tour
Tour Details
We'll meet at the indicated time at St. Stephen's Monastery to start a guided tour of one of the highlights of the monastic complex of Meteora, a World Heritage Site.
The monastery, also known as St. Stephanos, was built by the saint Anthony Katakouzinos between the 14th and 16th centuries on the south-eastern side of the Meteora rocks, at an altitude of 528 metres (1,732 feet) above sea level. Did you know during World War II, the monastery suffered several bombings, but a group of nuns decided to rebuild it?
During our tour of this temple, we'll learn all about the history of this sisterhood of women who still manage it today. We'll talk about the daily life of the monks who settled there in the past and about the Byzantine art and architecture that we'll see.
Inside, we'll also see a basilica, which was built in 1350 and rebuilt in 1545 by the saint Philotheos. Today, we can view frescoes from the 17th century that are continued to be preserved.
